✦About
There is a beautiful terror in not knowing. In philosophy, aporia is a state of puzzlement, the point where thought collapses; when the mind meets a paradox too large to solve. In theatre, aporia can be seen as the moment before the leap — when the body hangs between flight and fall.
This is a space for both.
Aporia Playhouse is a Singapore-based theatre collective that explores worlding, philosophy, and fairy tales through circus-inspired physical theatre, music, visual art, and all forms of play. We make performances that think through movement and worlding, that lets philosophy breathe and come alive. We believe that wisdom can be playful, that wonder is a form of truth, and that stories are powerful tools for connecting with the world and people around us. Through our work, we hope to rediscover the joy of asking, and of falling in love again with questions and every wild unknown.
We are born into stories we did not write. Thrown into a world we spend our whole lives trying to navigate and understand. The stories, philosophies, and fairy tales we inherit shape how we move, love, and believe. Theatre allows us to rewrite them, to touch the invisible architecture of thought itself. And above all, to have empathy.
At Aporia Playhouse we believe that philosophy is not only to be spoken, but to be thought through living it. That the questions of existence — truth, freedom, love, friendship, identity — can be explored through story and myth, breath, balance, and flight. Through various artistic practices, interrogating questions for better ones, and the occassional cheeky thought experiment, we rediscover the ancient kinship between the love of wisdom and what it means to world and wonder.
There is only now. As Walter Benjamin would say, this is Jetztzeit, the Now-Time: a time ripe with revolutionary possibillity. What does it mean to be alive, together, in the dream of this moment?
